Considerations in Making Our Handmade Pocket Journals

We wanted to add a handmade journal option to our little stationery shop in Denver. Something that compliments the variety we stock in-store from Appointed.

People who journal regularly or like to keep notebooks with them for impromptu thoughts have particular features in mind. It is fun for us at Idea Chic to talk with our guests about what is important to them in their journals and notebooks.

When it comes to creating a pocket journal with handmade charm, there are several key considerations that can make a significant difference in the final product. From the size and paper quality to the cover design and binding, every detail plays a crucial role in ensuring a functional and aesthetically pleasing journal.

What size is ideal for a pocket journal?

When our guest are looking for more of a pocket sized and function, the size of a pocket journal is essential for portability and convenience. A compact size, such as A6 envelope for example. This size works for slipping into a bag or pocket without adding unnecessary bulk. This ensures that the journal can be easily carried around for jotting down thoughts, ideas, or sketches on the go.

What type of paper works best?

The quality of the paper used in a pocket journal can greatly impact the writing experience. Our guests are thrilled to see we use nice paper stock in our greeting cards and stationery. One of the reasons we selected Appointed made journals and notebooks is their use of quality paper pages. For our handmade journal, paper weight of 24 lb writing text stock allows for a light weight binding and design. Perfect for stuffing in pockets of bags and pants.

How should the cover be designed?

The cover of a pocket journal not only serves to protect the pages inside but also adds to the overall aesthetic appeal. Our handmade journal are composed of 100 lb pale blue, moss green or terracotta cover stock. A full paper journal provides the flexibility and satisfies the paper lover.

Which binding style is most practical?

The binding of a pocket journal is crucial for keeping the pages secure and intact. Choose a binding style that allows the journal to lay flat when open. This makes it easier to write or sketch across the pages without any obstructions, enhancing the experience.

By carefully considering these key aspects of pocket journal design, we created a functional and visually appealing journal. The journal is composed of a slightly textured 100 lb cover paper in pale blue, moss green or terracotta stocks.  When the journal is opened three panels are featured. The center panel features 26 lined journal pages for all of your inspiration and note taking. The left panel features a small envelope pocket printed with "Little Extras". A perfect place for stickers, keepsakes, stamps and more! Each journal is double staple bound on the spine of the design. A silver brad and magnet fastener keeps the journal shut.

Here is what we came up with and how we make these little journals:

Whether you use it for bullet journaling, note-taking, or creative expression, we hope you love our hand-crafted pocket journal as a valuable companion in your daily life!
